About Contemporary Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
What is CBT?
Over the past 30 years, ABA has been established and is recognised as the most effective treatment for Autism. However, there is tremendous diversity in how ABA is applied. Prizant and Wetherby (1998) suggested that a more ‘contemporary’ behavioural treatment is achieved when teaching occurs in more natural learning environments, when there is more emphasis on the individualisation of curriculum and when there is “the use of more natural and balanced social transactions in which learning opportunities are initiated by the child”. They specifically identified the methodology and strategies utilised by Autism Partnership as an example of a contemporary approach. We have therefore adopted this name to define our approach. |
“It was the best decision that my husband and I had ever made for Christopher. When we decided to engage the services of Austism Partnership, we dropped all the other therapies and concentrated solely on the programme that Autism Partnership had to offer.”

What do you teach in a Contemporary Behavioural Therapy (CBT) programme?
We teach a range of skills depending upon the needs of the students. This often includes play and leisure skills, language and communication, conversational skills, problem solving, imagination and creativity, organisational skills, self-evaluation, initiation and social skills, perspective taking skills, emotional regulation skills, fine and gross motor skills.
Our programme also addresses motivational issues, improves attending skills in both one-on-one and classroom situations, reduces disruptive behaviours and improves listening, compliance and other learning to learn skill. This is all taught through different formats of 1:1 teaching, small groups, half day and full day school programmes.
“My husband and I are pleased to see the progress that Nicole has made under the programme run by Autism Partnership. Although there is a long road ahead of us, we recognise that in the past one year, we have seen very good progress in Nicole’s behaviour and ability to relate to others and environment.”

How do I get started in a CBT programme?
To design a programme, a full evaluation of the child’s skills and abilities is conducted. This involves studying reports and doing a range of assessments from structured observation and curriculum assessments to standardised psychological and developmental tests with our in-house psychologists. These assessments are carried out annually for all our clients to measure progress and provide guidelines for treatment.
Once programme goals have been established, they are carried out by our highly trained staff. Depending on the needs of the individual, staff conduct the teaching in 1:1, small group and school settings.
The programme is then rigorously overseen by our clinical consultants and supervisors who have been trained extensively in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Singapore. Regular supervision sessions ensure that the programme is being implemented most effectively and changes can be made to maximise progress immediately.
Once a month, the clinical consultant, case supervisor, team therapists and family meet in our office to discuss the progress of the child and to review programmes prescribed and re-examine the overall direction of the programme. Other professional and school personnel that are involved in the child’s treatment and education are also invited to join the meeting.
“For the first time in my precious son’s life, my husband and I saw progress. Specific objectives were laid out every month and the therapists would work with Christopher on these objectives. The monitoring and tracking of these objectives is beyond anything I have ever come across (trust me, I’ve been in the special education in many years). Every objective was carefully monitored tabulated and worked on.”

The Autism Partnership was established over 12 years ago to provide a comprehensive service to families and professionals caring for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
Our method, Contemporary Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is based on an established and systematic research based strategy, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which has been proven scientifically to be the most effective treatment for Autism.
