Do you know that April 2nd is internationally recognised as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD)? Every year, World Autism Awareness Day is observed to raise awareness and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). On this day, communities come together, and thousands of people dress in BLUE to show support. Landmarks and buildings worldwide also light up BLUE to recognise individuals with autism and those who love and support them.
Our team at Autism Partnership Singapore created a series of videos about ASD this April to provide accurate and positive information about ASD. The series aims to increase awareness about autism, reduce stigma and share ideas on supporting people with ASD and their loved ones. 💙
We invite you to learn more about ASD and join us in accepting and embracing their abilities.
Identifying signs and symptoms of autism and its prevalence rates
Autism (ASD) typically appears during the early years of life. Early assessment and intervention are crucial to a child’s long-term success. Early signs of autism include not meeting developmental milestones in domains such as social, verbal and non-verbal communication and behaviour and interest.
In Singapore, 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with ASD. This prevalence rate is higher than World Health Organisation (WHO)’s global figure of 1 in 160 children. It is good to know that the rise in individuals being diagnosed with ASD is likely the result of increased awareness and easy access to diagnostic tests.
Challenges faced by children with autism and their families
Parents and caregivers of children with autism face many challenges, from deciding on treatment and school to toggling between work and taking care of their child. Often, parents may also feel confused while seeking the best treatment available for their child.
Ways to support individuals with autism and their families as a society
Whether it is a loved one or someone you have casually met, parents with children with special needs can face a lot of pressure, challenges and emotions. While it is hard and impossible to fully understand the pressure, challenges, and emotions they have to go through, we invite you to learn how to support them better. 💙
